She Just Wanted a Pair of Shoes
A barefoot woman knocked on our office door in Georgetown. She just wanted a pair of shoes. That was all. Her feet were swollen and blistered. She explained that her shoes had been stolen.
We asked her for her name and where she was from. She said she was from Africa and her name was Taisha. We wanted to know where she had been living. She said “anywhere I can sleep.”
As we walked through our warehouse to several large containers of shoes, a smile broke out on her face. She found her new prized possessions, a pair of fancy brown boots with fur on the sides. Yet they were throwaways from our five thrift stores. Taisha was happy to pick through leftovers.
She found a few other accessories in our shoe containers. And she was beaming, obviously pleased with her new treasures.
On her way out of the warehouse, she turned to us and said thanks and then she was gone.
