Census Mail Starts: March 12, 2020

Every 10 years, the U.S. counts everyone in the country. All residents of every ethnicity, regardless of immigration status, including kids, seniors, military members, and people experiencing homelessness—are all counted as they have been since 1790.

The Census helps our community get the funding we need for schools, affordable housing, health care, and more.

Key Dates:

On or between You’ll receive in your home mailbox:

  • Starting today, March 12-20 — An invitation to respond by mail, online or by phone to complete the 2020 Census.
    (Some households will also receive paper questionnaires.)
  • March 16-24 A reminder letter.
  • If you haven’t responded yet:
    March 26-April 3 A reminder postcard.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • It is your right to complete the census.
  • The census does not include a question about citizenship or immigration status.
  • All answers are confidential and used only to produce statistics.
  • It is illegal for census information to be shared with your landlord.
  • It is illegal for census information to be shared with law enforcement or other agencies.
  • It is illegal for census information to be used to identify people for deportation.

This is our moment to join together—as a neighborhood, a city, a county, a state, and a country—and make sure each and every one of us is seen and counted.
