International Women’s Day: We’ll Be There for Women
International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century. It’s a day when women are recognized for their achievements. The theme for this year’s day focuses on women in leadership.
At the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP), we know about women in leadership. In the 1830’s in France, Blessed Rosalie Rendu offered guidance and direction to our founders and to the first Vincentians. A Daughter of Charity, when the Industrial Revolution spurred unrest, Blessed Rosalie herself climbed barricades to try and help the wounded fighters, irrespective of the side they were fighting on. She’s a true model of compassionate, bold and faith-driven leadership.
SVdP’s Centro Rendu takes its name from Blessed Rosalie Rendu. Like Blessed Rosalie, Centro Rendu inspires people – especially women – to lead, organize and advocate for justice.
Sister Rosalie was also a nurse, who cared deeply about the health and well-being of her neighbors. One way we are empowering women’s health is by offering a free mammogram clinic on April 10th.
Nearly one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and it’s the second leading cause of cancer death in women, next to lung cancer. As of January 2021, there are more than 3.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S., and about 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.¹
We believe that health and well-being are vital to a woman’s thriving. Whether it’s a free mammogram clinic, a high school diploma, help getting back to work, or assistance with rent or food, at SVdP, we’ll be there for women.
